Sami Camp in Breivikeidet

After a safety briefing on interacting with Reindeer, you'll be taken to the fence to meet the herd with buckets of feed. Spend some time with them inside the fence and take in the Arctic Valley views with the Lyngen Alps rearing its head in the distance. Crackling bonfires will be lit up around camp to keep you warm!

Then, head to the tracks with your guide and hop into the sleds connected to a Reindeer for a ride through the snow.

You'll then come back to a traditional Sami wooden hut, Gamme, or a big traditional tent called Tipi, and dinner will be served. The Sami guides will introduce you to their culture and artifacts and tell you about old traditions.

Reindeer and husky sledding tours in Tromso: A winter adventure through Arctic wilderness

If you want to glide across Tromso's snow-clad landscapes, then book a reindeer or husky sledding tour. Feel the exhilaration as Siberian Huskies or Alaskan Malamutes pull you across pristine Arctic landscapes, or connect with the heritage of Sami reindeer herders who have traversed these lands for generations. This also means you get access to the history, traditions, and breathtaking beauty of the Arctic's untamed world.

What to expect on a reindeer or husky sledding tour in Tromso?

Meet and bond with animals

Before the ride, you'll meet the stars of the show—spirited huskies or gentle reindeer. Huskies thrive on human interaction and will greet you with wagging tails and howls of excitement. Conversely, reindeer exude calm as you gently stroke their fur or feed them. Learn about their training, care, and unique personalities directly from their handlers.

Observing more Arctic wildlife

As you sled through Tromso's wilderness, the Arctic's secrets begin to reveal themselves. Look for the delicate footprints of an Arctic fox, the silent glide of a ptarmigan taking flight, or a moose wandering in the distance. If you're lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a snowy owl blending seamlessly into the snowy expanse.

Opportunities for photography

Every moment is a photo opportunity in the Arctic Norway. Whether it's capturing the playful energy of huskies, the elegance of reindeer, or the icy expanse of Tromso's wilderness, these sledding tours in Tromso are a dream for photographers. Your guides will be happy to stop for photos along the way.

Take the reins—Or sit back and relax

Depending on the tour, you might get to drive the sled yourself, especially with huskies. The guides will explain mushing commands like 'gee' and 'haw' to communicate with your canine team. For reindeer sledding, you'll ride in a traditional wooden sled while a Sami guide steers, leaving you free to soak in the landscape.

A glimpse of the Sami way of life

Reindeer sledding is deeply tied to the heritage of the Sami, the indigenous people of Norway. After your ride, gather in a lavvu (Sami tent) to hear ancestral tales, enjoy joik singing, and learn about reindeer herding—a cornerstone of Sami culture. Try your hand at lassoing, a skill vital to Sami herders, by practicing on a wooden reindeer target.

Warming up with local delights

After your adventure, most tours offer hot beverages and snacks. You might enjoy a cup of steaming reindeer soup (bidos), a Sami specialty, taste Arctic char, a fish prized for its delicate flavor, or sip warm cocoa while chatting with guides about their favorite Arctic tales.

Exploring Arctic flora and fauna

The Arctic may seem barren at first, but it holds a surprising array of life. Learn about resilient plants like reindeer lichen, dwarf birches, and Arctic moss that survive in harsh conditions. Guides will also explain how these plants sustain the ecosystem and are used by wildlife.

Witnessing Arctic weather phenomena

While sledding, you might experience unique Arctic weather phenomena like sun dogs (bright halos around the sun), sun pillars (a vertical beam of light that appears to extend from the sun), or frost smoke rising from frozen lakes. Guides will help you spot these natural occurrences and explain the science behind them.

Stargazing in the Arctic night sky

Tromso's dark, unpolluted skies make it a stargazer's paradise, with stars so vivid they seem within reach. During evening tours, take a moment to look up and marvel at constellations, shooting stars, or even the Milky Way spanning the horizon. If you are lucky, you might even spot a meteor shower.

Souvenirs shopping

Take home a piece of the Arctic with unique souvenirs from your adventure. Many tours offer opportunities to purchase handcrafted Sami treasures, such as reindeer leather bracelets, intricately carved wooden pieces, or traditional jewelry inspired by ancient designs.

General timings: Reindeer and husky sledding tours in Tromso typically run between 9am and 4pm, with Northern Lights sledding tours starting later in the evening.

Best time to go on sledding tours in Tromso: The ideal time to embark on a sledding adventure depends on your priorities:

  • For Northern Lights sledding: Plan your visit between late November and February when the polar nights enhance Aurora visibility.
  • For scenic day tours: January and February provide the deepest snow and longer daylight hours, perfect for soaking in the Arctic landscape.
  • For milder weather: Late September and early March offer relatively warmer weather, making them great for families or first-time visitors.

Meeting point: Most reindeer and husky sledding tours start from Tromso city center.

Getting to Tromso city center:

  • By bus: Tromso's local bus network efficiently connects surrounding areas to the city center. Use the Troms Billett app to check routes and schedules and buy tickets.
  • By car: Tromso is accessible via well-maintained roads. Parking options are available in the city center, though spaces can be limited during peak seasons.
  • By foot: For those staying in or near the city center, most tour pick-up points are within walking distance. Tromso's compact layout makes it easy to explore on foot.
  • Airport shuttle bus: It is a frequent service between the airport and the city center, with the journey taking around 15 minutes.
  • The Arctic cold is no joke as temperature can drop to -14 °C (7 °F). So, be sure to wear thermal undergarments, a fleece layer, and a windproof jacket to stay warm and comfortable. Some tours offer thermal suits, boots, and gloves. Don't hesitate to ask if you're unsure about the gear.
  • The wind can feel sharp while sledding, so covering your face with a balaclava or scarf is essential.
  • Sledding tours are incredibly popular during peak season. Book your tickets 3-4 weeks in advance to secure your spot.
  • It's easy to get separated in snowy terrain, so stay close to your tour guide and group members.
  • Learn some basic Sami phrases before your tour. Even a simple 'Giitu' (thank you) can go a long way in connecting with locals.
  • Please note Arctic weather is unpredictable, and tours may get rescheduled due to snow conditions.
  • Don't carry large baggage to avoid overloading the sled; this makes it harder for the animals to pull.
  • Sudden sounds can spook huskies and reindeer, so keep voices calm and steady.
  • Don't pet the animals without permission. While they may seem friendly, always ask the guide before approaching.
  • Avoid excessive movement on sleds, as shifting your weight can destabilize the sled and make it harder for the animals to pull.
  • Please don't wear strong perfumes or colognes, as strong scents can irritate the animals.
  • Many sledding locations are remote, so bathrooms or heated spaces might not be readily available.

Do I need prior experience to join Tromso sledding tours?

No prior experience is needed for sledding tours in Tromso! Reindeer sledding is guided and slow-paced, making it perfect for beginners.
